Played a singles tennis match Sunday afternoon with a good friend. Years ago in singles I “owned” him on the court. In most recent years, say the last 2 to 3, and especially after the injuries, he has “owned” me. I canned him in straight sets, “3 & 3”! Ever been called a secret weapon??? How long have you been doing what you do and how did you get to be a Certified Strength and Conditioning Specialist and Fitness Motivational Expert?
To answer this question, it's probably best that I share with you the two defining moments in my life that brought to where I am today.
It all started at fourteen years of age when my Mom and Dad introduced to me my first set of weights at Christmastime. It was at that point that I fell in love! I trained all through high school, read every fitness book and magazine that I could get my hands on. More specifically, it was my senior year in high school when I realized that fitness was a great interest. You see, I wrestled my junior year and began wrestling my senior year until I came to the realization that it was the "training" that I enjoyed so much more than the actual wrestling. It was the preparation for the matches that I really got excited about. It was the conditioning process: the running, lifting weights, and learning about nutrition! So, I was honest with myself and stopped wrestling early in the season and spent the rest of my senior year working out and learning as much as I could about fitness. I kept workout journals and even began training friends from the neighborhood in my basement. Teaching, motivating, and inspiring people came natural to me from the beginning!
The defining moment in my career came along in 2004 when I was introduced to David van der Mark. David was referred to me from a trainer colleague of mine named Edith Callahan. David had originally met with Edith to become a client, but after hearing his story she thought best that he would match up with me. From that point on, little did I know that my life was to change dramatically and unexpectedly!
David came to me at the age of 48 with the desire to celebrate his 50th birthday by running a marathon! It had been a very long time since David was involved in any activity so he came to me out of shape and living a sedentary lifestyle. Not only that, up to this point I had never trained anyone to run a marathon. What a combination, right?!
Edith must have picked up on David's good spirited demeanor and thought with my gentle, compassionate, yet disciplined approach to training, we would be a good match! Also, Edith knew that I had coached elementary/middle school track and field from 1998-2003. Thank God and the Universe for her judgment!
David and I were a match made in heaven! He was very coachable, and truly wanted to understand his training program. He would even do research on his own so he could keep up with the pace. The funny thing about that was the day he brought in these marathon books to me claiming that I was training him the way some "experts" were training beginner marathons. I thought that was pretty cool and it was not only a boost to my confidence but it confirmed that I was on the right track and that I was teaching David in the correct way.
So the training was moving along pretty well with an occasional set back or two along the way, so it was time for David to choose the beginner's marathon of his choice: The Cincinnati Flying Pig Marathon!
David surprised me by inviting my wife Kelly and me both to fly out to Cincinnati so we could all be together to celebrate this remarkable achievement and to enjoy both a coaching and a friendship weekend. That was just putting the icing on the cake to an already incredible journey of self discovery!
David successfully completed his marathon and to be able to be there at the finish line was the most incredible experience! Lots of hugs and happy tears, and high fives! It was one of the most emotionally moving experiences that I have ever been associated with!
In fact, the whole training experience with David was very heart warming. It was so much more than just logging miles and keeping running charts. It was intrinsically rewarding! It was about personal philosophy, about asking questions and finding answers, about facing fears and challenges, about high of highs and low of lows, about building character, self-confidence, self-esteem, and self-worth! See, this is what training means to me…It's about opening up your heart , your mind, and your soul so you can find out who and what you are really about, and truly give yourself the opportunity to discover things about yourself that you could never imagine!
It was this experience with David that inspired me to take the next step in my personal growth journey! I always wanted to trim down from my weightlifting/power lifting days in order to become even more healthy and fit as I was about to enter the decade of my 40's…so, this experience with David inspired me to train for the 26.2 mile journey myself! Wow, was I serious? I always thought I didn't belong out there because I didn't look like a "runner". But it didn't take me long to find out that there is a whole world of us "Clydesdale" runners out there. Not only are we out there, but our kind is crossing that 26.2 mile finish line more and more each year! I completed my first marathon in Baltimore 2005, and then went on to complete Cincinnati 2006, Baltimore 2006, Cleveland 2007, Richmond 2008, and I am currently training for The Marine Corps Marathon 2009!
So my life has never been the same since training David! Since then, not only have I gone on to train many other clients to complete marathons, half-marathons, 10k's and 5k's, but more importantly, my experience with David has had a profound influence on my relationships with all of my clients! I have learned and grown so much as a result of this "marathon" experience, that I look forward to each and every "fitness" relationship that I have the opportunity to become a part of.
No matter what your "personal story" is realize that if you approach life with an open heart and open mind combined with a determined "never give up" attitude, your personal growth is limitless! How exciting is that!
